"One of the biggest
challenges with training police officers
in defensive tactics is attempting to
connect the exercises, information, and
techniques as close to an actual police
use of force situation as possible. Preparing
officers for an actual use of force event
is a demanding task when utilizing a controlled
training environment.
Officer Alberto and his
instructors have developed a practical
lesson plan which mirrors in application
to an actual street encounter. The delivery
of this lesson plan better prepared our
officers for a use of force encounter
requiring our police baton. We documented
our officers’ reactions prior to the training
and compared to their post training reaction
and found a marked improvement in response
to the threat. While officers are not
always thrilled about reporting to in-service
training, their critiques were overwhelmingly
positive as they requested “more of this
type of training”.
